A couple of days ago, I went to Salt Restaurant & Bar in Whitianga with my parents and some family friends. My parents had been given a voucher for the restaurant, so I couldn’t say no when I was asked to come along. I mean, who says no to free food? Monsters. That’s who.
Salt Restaurant & Bar is one of the restaurants that has popped up in the developing town of Whitianga. Set by the marina, Salt would be the perfect place to take a date or a friend for a birthday dinner. There are three main dining areas: Outside under the shelter or out on the deck, and inside the restaurant. It was a cold winter night, so we chose to sit inside by the fireplace. Part of me wishes that we got to sit outside so I could stare at the twinkling fairy lights.
We were seated and were lucky to have the most attentive waiter I have ever seen. He was funny and relaxed. He really got our ‘vibe’ after a few minutes of talking to us. I don’t know how you feel, but an attentive, knowledgeable, and funny waiter makes the whole experience a lot better. We were given complimentary bread and had ordered our entrees, mains, and drinks within fifteen minutes of being seated.
Being on the Coromandel, the menu largely consists of seafood for entrees and half of the mains. I found the menu was rather limited. I don’t know if that was because I don’t like seafood or because I’m pregnant and my taste buds are rather screwed up. I have been having a love affair with carbs, so I ordered the Saffron risotto with wilted spinach, and a mocktail.
I’ve never had saffron before, but the risotto tasted absolutely amazing. It looked absolutely gorgeous on the plate. The yellow colour popped on the plate. The risotto was rich and the texture was thick. Exactly what a good risotto is supposed to be. Unfortunately, I got half way through the plate before the richness of the dish started to irritate my stomach. Since becoming pregnant, my stomach hasn’t been able to handle rich foods. I do love being pregnant, but it is really screwing with my eating habits.
Luckily for me, the other people at my table were more than happy to clean my plate.
It got to dessert and my stomach was still feeling ick, so I decided to skip it. Everyone else chowed down on passionfruit and vanilla cheesecake, and blood orange chocolate mousse.
The restaurant is beautiful. The staff members are friendly, helpful, and always up for a good chat. However, I did cringe when I was told the bill total. The food was good, but I feel like the portions were small for how much it costed. All I can say is thank goodness for having that voucher. It is a great place, but it is also on the pricy side.
I would recommend it to other people, but definitely only for special occasions. I wouldn’t mind going back for a graduation dinner or for a birthday. Hint, hint family 😉
All in all, it was lovely and I’m glad that I can tick another restaurant off my list.
Salt Restaurant & Bar is located at 2 Blacksmith Lane, Whitianga 3510. The restaurant is open on Wednesday and Thursday from 4pm, and Friday-Sunday from 11:30am.
