Last year, my sister and I were lucky enough to be invited to go on a tour with Ocean Leopard Tours. I had been cooped up in the house for the last couple of days, so I was keen on the idea. To say the least. I mean, who wouldn’t want to go on a trip that shows you the absolute best of the Coromandel?
We waited until the weather was clear and made sure there was enough room on the boat for us. We were in luck and there was! This was the first time I was going on a boat in a long time, so I was kind of nervous. Plus, I had never been on a boat without a parent before, so this was a milestone of sorts.
A group of ten of us boarded the boat and we set off for a two hour long journey of the Coromandel, New Zealand.
People always talk about how amazing it is to see New Zealand by land, but I think by sea is far better. You crazy people fighting all the traffic are definitely missing out on something beautiful…and relaxing. We got to whizz (or putter) around all the bays as we were told a plethora of information from a very knowledgeable skipper and tour guide.
I felt like I was constantly turning in my seat to get a glimpse of a new view or to get a new angle of the view we had just left behind. I don’t know about you, but I find the ocean to be oddly relaxing. You know, when you’re on top of it. You couldn’t pay me enough money to get off the boat and into the ocean. Ever.
That being said, you are given the option to go snorkelling in several places throughout the trip. That is, if the weather conditions permit.
One of my favourite sites was Cathedral Cove. We got to see it up close and without the hoards of tourists fighting their way down the beach. It was beautiful. Newsflash: Majority of the Narnia films were filmed in New Zealand. In fact, one of the most famous locations for the films was Cathedral Cove.
My parents had been living on the Coromandel for years and I still hadn’t made it to Cathedral Cove. I’m quite happy to say that I finally crossed it off my list after this tour. Well, kind of. I’ve seen it from the sea, but it has only fuelled my desire to see it on land, too. Maybe one day.
After visiting the famous spot, we left for our final destination, the Orua sea cave.
The ocean was calm enough for us to go into the cave and look around before heading out and back to Whitianga again. It was absolutely amazing.
My sister and I went on the Full Monty trip. We got to see some amazing places during this trip. Who wouldn’t want to see them? The full list is: Lonely Bay, Shakespeare Cliff, Cooks Beach, Hahei, Cathedral Cove, the Te Whanganui-A-Hei Marine Reserve, and Orua sea cave. The whole trip took two hours and it absolutely flew by.
So, would I go on the trip again?
We got to see some beautiful places and were told all about the history of the land. I know I haven’t mentioned it much, but I am a bit of a history nerd. I love knowing things. I also feel like I haven’t seen enough of New Zealand and I’m glad I was invited to go on this trip. Will I take my children on this trip? Yes! It is perfect for adults and children alike, so everyone can see how beautiful New Zealand is!
I hadn’t been on an official tour before this one, but it has opened my eyes. Tours are a great way to see the area without wandering about by yourself. I’m so convinced that I’m planning to go on a tour in every new area I visit!
If you want to book your own trip with Ocean Leopard Tours then visit their website! Trust me, you won’t regret it.
